Here are a few notes from my dulcimer experience. Take it
for what it's worth.
 | Dulcimer Makers: There has been a lot of discussion about
dulcimer recommendations on Sweet Music Digest list serve, these are
makers I would recommend from my personal experience:
Owl
Mountain Music has a very comprehensive list of builders.
|
 | On-Line Dulcimer Stores: These are on-line stores that I
have used and would use again.
|
 | Dulcimer Books:
There is a very large spectrum in the quality of books that are
available to the Dulcimer player.
|
 | Dulcimer Magazine: There is only one magazine around at this time.
Dulcimer Players News.
It is well worth the minimal cost - if for no other reason that to keep an
eye on the festival listings. |
 | On-line Dulcimer TAB sites: I really appreciate
the people who are willing to share their hard work with others -
Thanks.
|
 | Dulcimer Videos:
There really are not a lot to choose from for the Dulcimer Player - at
least compared to other instruments. Here
is my short list - there are a couple others out there that I haven't
seen personally.
 | Mark Biggs, "Learn to Play Mountain Dulcimer" - Beginner
Instruction - Recommended. A little dated - get a chromatic
tuner (Korg CA 30). |
 | Joe Carr, "Dulcimer Chord Video" - I didn't
find this video very useful. |
 | Dennis Lee, "Learn the Mountain Dulcimer" - Beginner
Instruction - Not my first choice. |
 | Mark Nelson, "Beginning Appalachian Dulcimer" - Beginner/Advanced
Beginner Instruction - Recommended |
 | Mark Nelson, "Dynamic Dulcimer" - Recommended for
intermediate to advanced. Repertoire builder - there
isn't any tab. |
 | Debbie Porter, "Building your Repertoire" - Beg/Adv Beg
- Instruction/Repertoire Building. This is a fun tape to virtual JAM
with. |
 | Jean Ritchie, "Mountain Born, the Jean Ritchie Story" -
Documentary - Recommended. |
 | David Schnaufer "Learning Mountain Dulcimer" -
Advanced Beginner Instruction. Excellent |
|
 | Music Theory - Some day I'll figure it out. I highly
recommend any of these guy's theory workshops.
 | Jerry Rockwell - "Music Theory and Chord Reference for the
Mountain Dulcimer" - well done - the how-to book when you
finally decide it is time to learn the fretboard and chords. |
 | Jerry Rockwell - visit his web site -
DulciTheory
Newsletter |
 | Neal Walters - "Practical Theory Stuff" - Concise,
understandable - booklet. |
 |
Mark Tindle - "Simple Theory for the Mountain Dulcimer" -
a quality product - valuable information. |
 | Neal Hellman - "Dulcimer Chord Book" - This a must have
book for all dulcimer players. Not just chords, but
theory, tunings, and more. |
 | Lorraine Lee Hammond - If you get the chance - take her theory
class. A lot of pieces fell together after hearing Lorraine. |
 | Ed Roseman (not a Dulcimer book) - "Edly's Music
Theory for Practical People". |
 |
Kitchieboy's Music Tutor - Nice on-line resource for basic
theory. |
 | Theory on the
Web - Another great source for basic theory content. |
 |
MusicTheory.Net - I really like their chord calculator. |
 | Bob Lewis -
Music Analysis Guide for Melodic Autoharp - a unique way
to display scale, chord, mode information. |
